_How is a nonprofit publisher different from a commercial publisher?

As a nonprofit institution, the Aruba Heritage Foundation prioritizes knowledge and enthusiasm over profits. Whereas a commercial publisher aims to make money to benefit its shareholders, a nonprofit publisher has a mission that benefits the ‘greater good’ of the community it serves. As such, the Foundation uses its received funds for nothing other than the mission for which it was formed. Although the Foundation strives to embrace the best practices of the for-profit publishers in order to survive (after all, ‘no money, no mission’), the profit that is earned is used solely to support the organization, or it is granted to other, related nonprofit organizations.

_As a nonprofit publisher, how does the Foundation support itself?

The Foundation is largely dependent on voluntary work, donations and subsidies.

_Are all of the Foundation’s books subsidized?

No, they are not. Subsidies are only assigned to books that will likely not recover their production costs. As the Foundation is dedicated to reaching the audiences for which its books are intended, setting the right price for a book sometimes means that subsidies and donations are required to break even.
